Our program, a legacy of Dr. Fred Bryans, aims to raise the quality of clinical education across the Faculty of medicine’s distributed sites by creating a network of outstanding community-based clinical teachers.

What makes this program unique?

map of BCOur program puts into practice key principles of outstanding

faculty development. These include: the use of experiential learning, provision of feedback to participants, effective peer and colleague relationships, well-designed educational  interventions, and the use of a diversity of educational methods within single interventions.(1)  Our program is unique because we work with local facilitators to customize the content and delivery methods to the participants.

Who is the program for?

The Fred Bryans Master Teacher (FBMT) program is developed by physicians for physicians and addresses the common teacing challenges physicians face in clinical settings. Our curriculum is organized around three key steps in the physician-patient-learner interaction: What learning happens:

          • before you see the patient (Module A Time Saving Tips for Ambulatory Teachers)
          • during the patient encounter (Module B Teaching with Patients the Art of Questioning)
          • after the patient encounter (Module C Feedback and Assessment)

We discuss the common teaching myths and mistakes that physicians make at each of these steps that result in ineffective and time-consuming teaching. Our sessions are highly interactive, we discuss practical and effective teaching strategies for the clinical setting.

How is the program delivered?

The FBMT program establishes a longitudinal relationship between the program and the participants, and between the participating clinicians. The

curriculum is ideally delivered over one year. We plan for four educational sessions but  local facilitators may choose to have fewer longer sessions, or more frequent shorter sessions. These sessions may be face to face, or online.  Participants work through the course material together. Discussing your teaching experiences, challenges, and successes, with a group of colleagues is interesting and enjoyable.
